Fashion Afar installation at Comme as part of the State of Design Festival 2009 designer Alexi Freeman and architect Aaron Roberts of Room11 continue their collaborative project AFAR; an acronym combining both their initials. I popped into the opening last week to check out their current piece, in which Roberts applies architectural technologies to Freeman’s recognisable yellow Criss Cross design. Installed in the lush surrounds of Comme, the venue – as a heritage listed building – provided its own challenge as the process of hanging the piece from the ceiling was lengthened by the designers only being allowed to use existing fixings. However the muted classic, black and white, heritage look also provides a nice balance to the streamlined, modern installation. The piece has a kind of moveable, three dimensional effect that is heightened as you walk around and even underneath it.

The AFAR project will be on display at Comme (7 Alfred Place, Melbourne) until this Saturday from 12pm til late. Entry is free.
